ahg-Handstop integral

Ive suffered pain in my right hand/wrist (Im a left-hander) since I started target shooting. For a whilst I thought it was a natural consequence of shooting - particularly as so many people experience it. Then after speaking with other shooters, I came to realize that it isnt normal, and needed to be fixed. Indeed the discomfort was having an impact on my shooting, not least because I would invariably hurry the last few shots.

The discomfort was caused by multiple causes; the stock wasnt sitting in the heel of my hand, but rather in the palm. Plus, the handstop was pressing against the outside of my forefinger. And finally the sling was pressing against my wristbone, just before it reached the handstop. So basically everything was a mess!

After some investigation on the Web I decided to try the ahg-Handstop integral. The snag with buying such accessories is that you cant invariably try them out before-you-buy, say in a shop. Ahg though had specified the product to be one to address discomfort, so it seemed to be a product I had to try.

Im UK-based and even with the carriage it was cheaper to buy from Buinger in Germany. After a matter of weeks the new handstop arrived.

It took a while to get the best out of it, principally because the handstop has so many different possible adjustments. With just an Allen key you can move the handstop section up/down, side-to-side, at an angle up/down and to one side....You can have the sling hook attach to the bottom of the handstop, or to its own attachment point ahead of the stop. Endless fun, but at some point you have to find a way to make best use of it, and that means dedicating the time to changing one thing at a time, then attaching the sling, bringing the rifle up to (my left) shoulder..trying something else. Endless fiddling really.

Ive ended-up, for the moment, with this configuration. Remember Im a leftie so unless you are one of us 12%ers (the number of people who are left-handed) dont try my solution!

The sling is attached to its own attachment point, not the handstop bit.

Looking down the barrel the handstop is angled to the right and down about 10 degrees.

The consequence of this is;

* The handstop now sits comfortably in the fleshy gap between forefinger and thumb.
* The rifle stock now sits in the heel of my palm (inside my right-hand glove)
* The sling avoids my wrist-bone altogether now. Rather it passes under my forearm with no pressure and attaches at a shallower angle to the sling attachment point.

I messed around with the handstop position a bit. Moved it forward quite-a-bit, then back a bit...a bit more. Finally got a comfortable Matt Emmons-like 45 degree angle.

The end result? Second session with it in its current position and I achieved a new PB. Without the discomfort I was experiencing before I can take my time shooting.
